Welcome to the Lennox Shorei Karate club, we are located at 11911 S. Vermont Ave. The site was recently refurbished and is now the Audrey and Sydney Irmas Youth Activity Center and houses the Lennox Sheriff's Station Youth Activity League. There are currently 20 students enrolled in the program ranging from age 8 to 17, male and female. The dojo began in 2000 under the tutelage of John S. Soltis, ninth degree black belt (Ku dan), and Juan Carlos Tapia, fifth degree lack belt (Go dan) and is now led by Bruce Elder fifth degree black belt (Go dan). The curriculum covers 15 traditional Okinawa kata, 4 groups of techniques and weapons such Bo staff and Kama.
The dojo is located in a multi-purpose room at the Audrey and Sydney Irmas Youth Activity Center and is supported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Youth Foundation through private donations and grants. The facility is secure with active deputies on site to coordinate other programs, trips and events for the participants.
The overall purpose of the program allows the student to gain insight of Shorei-Ryu and an understanding of perseverance, achievement and self confidence through the guiding principles of karate. The dojo has an open door policy and welcomes anyone who would like to join the Shorei-Ryu family.
