In 2000 when the renovation of the Firestone center was complete the program changed location to gain more participants from a wider area. There are currently 35 students enrolled in the program ranging from age 8 to 17, male and female. The class is taught by Ramsey Nicholson second degree black belt (Ni dan), assisted by Joe Luis Pantoja second degree black belt (Ni dan) and Rafael Acevedo first degree black belt(Sho dan). The curriculum covers 15 traditional Okinawa kata, 4 groups of techniques and weapons such Bo staff and Kama.
The dojo is located at the Firestone Center and is supported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Youth Foundation through private donations and grants. The facility is secure with active deputies on site to coordinate other programs, trips and events for the participants.
The overall purpose of the program allows the student to gain insight of Shorei-Ryu and an understanding of perseverance, achievement and self confidence through the guiding principles of karate. The dojo has an open door policy and welcomes anyone who would like to join the Shorei-Ryu family.
